Risks and Complications of Liposuction

Before going for liposuction, you want to consider your unique risks before embarking on the journey of having major surgery done.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that suctions the fat out of an area of the body. People most often get this procedure done if they feel like they could lose weight or look more toned on a particular part of the body.

For some, it is an easy and fast way to lose weight. Liposuction can be done on any area of the body such as the stomach, buttocks, thighs, and even the face.

But as with all surgical procedures, liposuction has its list of risks and complications. Even when having your liposuction done by a highly recommended and experienced professional, there is always the possibility of a certain complication arising during or after the surgery.

There are certain complications that are actually relatively common. One such complication includes swelling. As with most surgeries, any area of the body that receives unusual and unnatural trauma will swell in defense. Constant massage and good postoperative care is essential to getting the swelling to go down.

Having different skin sensations is another common complication. These different skin sensations could be numbing of a certain area or extreme pain in another area where the liposuction was performed.

Bruising is almost inevitable when having liposuction done. Bruising is only temporary, however, and will go away with time and healing.

Wrinkling of the skin is also somewhat common. This complication is especially evident in people who have skin that wrinkles or dimples easily as well as those with stretch marks and cellulite. The skin’s elasticity is unique to each individual person.

Muscle spasms also occur in those who have just gotten liposuction done. These spasms may either go away with time or with gentle and warm massaging of the area.

And as with any major surgical procedure, there is also a series of severe risks and complications that may come with it. These are more rare than the common risks, but they do happen to certain patients.

The decision to have surgery is always a very personal one. This procedure carries a low risk of serious complication or death… but it can happen!

For me, the health risk of being overweight outweighed these risks. You should talk to your doctor about these risks to make your decision. For me, it all went great… not so for everyone!
